Practice Assignments

Structured exercises to develop your painting skills

Our assignments are designed to build skills progressively. Each exercise includes clear instructions, suggested materials, and learning objectives. Work at your own pace and submit completed work for optional feedback.

Foundation Level Assignments

Assignment 1: Color Mixing Chart

Objective: Develop understanding of color relationships and mixing.

Materials: Primary colors (red, blue, yellow), white, canvas board or paper.

Instructions: Create a color mixing chart showing how primary colors combine to create secondary and tertiary colors. Include tints (colors mixed with white) and note the proportions used.

Time: 2-3 hours

Assignment 2: Value Scale Study

Objective: Practice mixing and applying different values.

Materials: One color (any), white, black, canvas board.

Instructions: Paint a value scale from pure white to pure black, with at least seven distinct steps. Then paint a simple object (like a sphere) using only this value range to show form.

Time: 2-3 hours

Assignment 3: Simple Still Life

Objective: Practice observation and basic composition.

Materials: 2-3 simple objects, canvas, basic paint set.

Instructions: Arrange 2-3 simple objects with good lighting. Focus on accurate drawing, basic color relationships, and creating a sense of form through value changes.

Time: 4-6 hours

Intermediate Level Assignments

Assignment 4: Limited Palette Study

Objective: Learn to create variety with limited colors.

Materials: Three colors plus white, canvas.

Instructions: Choose a subject (portrait, landscape, or still life) and paint it using only three colors plus white. Focus on mixing to create all needed colors and values.

Time: 6-8 hours

Assignment 5: Atmospheric Study

Objective: Practice creating depth and atmosphere.

Materials: Landscape reference or setup, canvas, full color palette.

Instructions: Paint a landscape focusing on atmospheric perspective. Show how colors become cooler and less distinct in the distance. Pay attention to value relationships between foreground, middle ground, and background.

Time: 8-10 hours

Feedback Process

After completing an assignment, you may submit your work for feedback. Our instructors provide constructive comments on technique, composition, color use, and areas for continued practice. Feedback is delivered within one week of submission.

To submit work, photograph your painting in good, even light. Ensure the image is clear and shows accurate colors. Include a brief note about your process and any specific questions you have.

Assignment Tips

Getting the Most from Assignments

Read assignment instructions carefully before beginning. Understanding the objectives helps you focus your practice and achieve the intended learning outcomes.

Take your time with each exercise. Rushing through assignments reduces their educational value. It's better to complete fewer exercises thoroughly than to rush through many.

Keep a practice journal to note observations, challenges, and discoveries. This reflection deepens your learning and helps you track your progress over time.

Self-Assessment Guide

After completing an assignment, take time to assess your work objectively. Compare your results to the demonstration examples and identify both strengths and areas for improvement.

Ask yourself specific questions: Did you achieve the stated objectives? What techniques worked well? What would you do differently next time? This self-assessment develops critical observation skills essential for artistic growth.

Remember that learning to paint is a gradual process. Each assignment builds skills, and progress may not always be immediately visible. Trust the process and continue practicing.
